An important part of the ADAPT vision is to make generational change to the housing of people with disabilities throughout the world, starting in New Zealand. This requires advocating for change and working with policy makers to ensure that future thinking decisions are made to ensure houses are built to meet the needs of current and future generations. In partnership with strong advocacy organisations such as Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA) and New Zealand Disability Support Network (NZDSN) we are actively working to positively influence policy

In New Zealand effective policy will only come if we work collaboratively with

• Te Manatū Whakahiato Ora – Ministry of Social Development

• Manatū Harora – Ministry of Health

To ensure all policy align to best provide the desired outcome of the right type of housing, enough homes, the best support and lifestyle for people with disabilities, all whilst making a financially viable case.

Modular house designs that can be built at scale with the right materials and space to allow accessibility to all at every stage of their life regardless of abilities.

Homes that are warm, dry, sustainable and fit into their environment with consideration.

We can see the value of embedding a supported neighbourhood within any new development's masterplan. The guidelines will assist developers understand how the neighbourhood can sit within the community context and what factors are important to create a great place to call home for everyone. This can assist greatly by providing a heartbeat and dynamic place to develop a true sense of community.

ADAPT have vast experience and research to share and can consult with a developer or local authority. We also have a great team of partners connected to our team who are leaders and design thinkers in this space to drive master planning and urban design outcomes.

A vast majority of the existing housing stock including new builds does not take into consideration the challenges that a large majority of people will face throughout their lives. This leads to either people struggling to live in homes that do not fit their needs or the requirement to move or undertake expensive renovations.
